Johns and Yang end Wong’s home doubles run with Kim; Jack still alive in singles

Collin Johns and Len Yang beat Eunggwon Kim and Hong Kit Wong 11-3, 8-11, 11-5 in the men’s doubles round of 16 at Kai Tak. Wong is out of doubles — but still into the singles quarterfinals against Federico Staksrud.

PPA Tour Asia

Hong Kong’s Hong Kit Wong is out of men’s doubles alongside partner Eunggwon Kim — but he still has a singles quarterfinal left at Kai Tak.

On Thursday 22 October at the Hang Seng Bank Hong Kong Slam, No.8 seeds Collin Johns and Len Yang beat Kim and Wong 11-3, 8-11, 11-5 on Championship Court in the round of 16. Johns and Yang advance to the men’s doubles quarterfinals; Kim and Wong’s doubles campaign ends there.

Three games, one home exit

Johns and Yang took the opener 11-3. Kim and Wong answered in game two, 11-8, to force a decider in front of the home crowd. The third stayed with the seeded pair: Johns and Yang closed it out 11-5.

The matchup carried extra history. In August at the Skechers Shenzhen Open, the same Johns/Yang pairing beat Kim/Wong 11-7, 11-8 in the men’s doubles final. Thursday was the rematch — this time in Wong’s backyard, and this time in the last 16 of Asia’s first PPA 1500.

Kim and Wong had reached the round of 16 with straight-set wins over Sam Wu / Changyou Tsai (11-3, 11-0) and Easton Horricks / Julian Chow (11-5, 11-9).

Jack still in singles — next up Staksrud

Wong is out of men’s doubles, but not out of the Slam. Earlier on Thursday he came through a three-game men’s singles round of 16 against Francis Chi, 8-11, 11-0, 11-2, to reach the quarterfinals.

His quarterfinal opponent is Federico Staksrud, the No.2 seed. The two met in the men’s singles quarterfinals at the MB Hanoi Cup in April; Staksrud won that one 7-11, 11-6, 12-10. Kai Tak gets the rematch for a place in the last four.

What’s next

Johns and Yang move on in men’s doubles; a potential quarterfinal path still points toward a Johns-brothers collision if top seeds Ben Johns and Gabriel Tardio also advance. Men’s singles quarterfinals are scheduled for Friday 23 October at Kai Tak Arena.
